Friends of Lott House

The Friends of the Lott House is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was incorporated as the Hendrick I. Lott House Preservation Association in 1994. The group was founded by a group of architects and community members who were passionate about preserving the historic Lott House, which was unoccupied and in a state of disrepair.

Today, the Friends of the Lott House continues to be composed of community volunteers who are working in collaboration with NYC Parks and Historic House Trust towards restoring the interior of the house and opening it to the public. The organization is committed to ensuring that this important piece of New York City's history is preserved for future generations.

Our Mission

Friends of the Lott House’s mission is to preserve and interpret the history and material culture of the 1720 and 1800 Hendrick I. Lott farmhouse in Marine Park, Brooklyn. It aims to educate and engage the public about this historic structure; the Lott family; the farm; the community of enslaved, immigrant and native-born workers; and the history of southern Brooklyn through interpretive programming.

Indigenous Land and Cultural Acknowledgement

The lands of Marine Park, and those owned by the Lott Family were historically part of the Lenapehoking, the traditional homeland of the Lenape people, which includes the Canarsee, a Munsee-speaking band of Lenape.

The Lenape people have lived, and continue to live, on this land for thousands of years, and their culture, history, and traditions are deeply tied to this place. We honor and respect the enduring relationship that the Lenape people have with their ancestral land and acknowledge this land was taken from the indigenous peoples.

Historically, these lands were worked by enslaved Africans against their will, enduring brutal conditions without pay or recognition, and they were denied basic freedoms. People of color and immigrant groups have also endured inhumane conditions and prejudice while contributing to the growth and development of our city, state, and nation. Friends of the Lott House hopes to provide a voice for marginalized and underrepresented groups forming a comprehensive narrative of our history.
